Float Tank Temperature: FTA Safety Guidance

What is the ideal temperature for a float tank? The Floatation Tank Association’s latest Safety Bulletin provides guidance on float solution temperature, comfort, and safety during extended float sessions.

Recommended Float Tank Temperature

For most floatees, maintaining float solution near average skin temperature provides the best balance of comfort and consistency.

The FTA recommends a float solution temperature of approximately 93–96°F (34–35.5°C). This thermoneutral, or skin-neutral, range allows the body to relax without adding unnecessary heat stress.

Temperatures at or above core body temperature, approximately 98.6°F (37°C), do not provide additional benefit for most floatees and may increase physiological strain during prolonged immersion.

Temperatures below 93°F (34°C) are generally safe, but may feel noticeably cold and can increase body awareness or muscle tension.

Why Float Solution Temperature Matters

Unlike on land, the body has limited ability to cool itself while immersed in warm, high-salinity water. Sweat evaporation cannot effectively regulate body temperature, making thoughtful temperature management especially important during longer float sessions.

The FTA Safety Bulletin brings together thermoregulation research and public-health guidance for warm-water environments to help float center operators maintain a safe, comfortable, and consistent experience.
