H2O2

Hello all,

Is there documentation that addresses the approved use of H2O2 that is contrary to the highlighted paragraph of the EPA statement in the attached document? We have a Pierce County Health Department reviewer brining this item up. Every Float Center we have been to in Washington State uses H2O2 in conjunction with UV/Ozone. They are saying we cannot use it due to the federal EPA statement.

Thoughts?

Hello Out There...

Hello, my wife and I are in the process of the process of opening our float center. You read that correctly, no typo. While we are both experienced business owners, the Float Spa business is new for both of us, but like most Floaties, (Our term for professionals in the business space, and truly enthusiastic serial floaters.) we have come to see the great value in the practice, as well as a great business opportunity in our community. We acknowledge that we are new to this world, and have a great deal to learn. I am posting this as a possible forum for other new business creators to have as a valuable resource, and hopefully and information magnet that we can benefit from ourselves.

We are in the from--scratch portion of our journey. We are currently looking for commercial space that we can do the extensive buildout we know is…

Hey there, did you get the info you were looking for? What tests do you need info on? Depending on where you are and how you’re regulated, you’ll test your float SOLUTION (technically not water) for specific gravity (buoyancy) which informs you how much Epsom salt needs to be added. And whatever products you’re using for your sanitation process (hydrogen peroxide, chlorine/bromine).

ADA Requirements

Hello all,

We are currently in the process of opening a float center in Gig Harbor, WA which falls under the permitting jurisdiction of Pierce County. Our current reviewer is giving us a hard time with accessibility requirements to the point of mentioning an open pool with a lift. Clearly for us that is not sensory deprivation. Our review of the ADA items were thorough and specifically 36.406 (b):

https://www.ada.gov/law-and-regs/design-standards/2010-stds/#36406-standards-for-new-construction-and-alterations

§ 36.406 Standards for new construction and alterations.

  • (b) Scope of coverage. The 1991 Standards and the 2010 Standards apply to fixed or built-in elements of buildings, structures, site improvements, and pedestrian routes or vehicular ways located on a site. Unless specifically stated otherwise, advisory notes, appendix notes, and figures contained in the 1991 Standards and 2010 Standards explain or illustrate the requirements of the rule; they do not establish enforceable requirements.

The reviewer claims that Pierce County does not…

Hello!

First, I'm very sorry for my delayed response. I also just sent you a more detailed message.

Here are our suggestions:

  1. Connect with a local attourney. You may be able to sumbit a variance request.

  2. I'm not sure what to say about Pierce County going by the ICC code instead of the ADA code, but either way, my understanding is that the issue is coming from a local interpretation of a federal standard.

  3. The code states "Readily achievable means easy to do without much difficulty or expense. This is based on the Title III business’s size and resources. So, a business with more resources is expected to remove more barriers than a business with fewer resources. The ADA strikes a careful balance between increasing access for people with disabilities and understanding the financial challenges of many small businesses." It sounds like some float centers were able to show that it is not readily achievable to add an open pool and lift.

  4. And finally, connect with any other centers in your county that may have advice or contacts. We're all in this together!

Thank you,

Jocelyn Jester on behalf of the FTA Board of Directors.

Idea for Roundtable - How to stay compliant to anti-spam laws

Upon hearing that a few float centers have been sued for not having a clear op-in form with a privacy policy and terms and conditions, I think a roundtable on this subject could be very beneficial for float centers, including my own. Perhaps the board can find people who have a clear understanding of Can Spam laws, privacy policies, etc. and eventually host a discussion on the topic? If we can prevent even just one more float center from getting sued, I would consider that a huge win and a huge help by the FTA!

True, I'll research the collective and see what can be found. This is one of the reasons the FTA exists and might be something we can provide guidance on and create possibly create guidelines for legal and safe communications and operations.

Hey Mary KAy - I hate to send you elsewhere, but we don't have any specific suggestions about insurance. There are a lot of variables about this. There's currently a lively conversation about insurance on the Float Collective - I encourage you to search on there for ideas.

I've been operating Float Madison, in Madison, Wisconsin, USA since April, 2016, and I love seeing and hearing of the powerful impact floating has on so many people in our community! I've been running my float center by myself since we opened 7+ years ago, which I don't really recommend unless you really feel drawn to doing so, but I love it and also look forward to finally putting together a team here sometime soon. I also served on the FTA board for about 4 years as treasurer, worked on the website a bit, led the Manufacturer's committee, and served in a couple other committies as well. I love seeing more float cetners open up around the world, and if anyone ever has any questions about anything float business related, from soundproofing, to the various types of float tanks, to pricing structures, to electrical, to fixing float tanks, fixing HVAC systems, repairing washing machines, dryers, etc., please feel free to reach out anytime!
